Why Your Photos Look Blurry After You Upload Them

You look at the photo on your phone and it's crisp. You post it, or send it in a group chat, and suddenly it's a bit soft, a bit blocky around sharp edges, not ruined, just noticeably worse. That's not a broken upload and it's not your imagination. Almost every platform you send a photo through re-compresses it, on purpose, as a matter of policy.

Why platforms do this at all

A single unedited photo from a modern phone can run 4-8 megabytes. Multiply that by every photo posted to a platform with millions of active users and you get a genuinely enormous amount of storage and bandwidth, most of it for detail nobody's actually looking at when they scroll past a thumbnail in a feed. Compressing every upload down to a fraction of its original size is a deliberate trade: a bit of visible quality loss in exchange for pages that load fast and storage bills that stay sane. Almost every major platform, social networks, messaging apps, forums, makes this trade somewhere in its pipeline.

What compression actually throws away

Formats like JPEG (which is what most re-compression targets) work by throwing away detail that the human eye is statistically less likely to notice, fine colour variation especially, while trying to preserve the overall shapes and brightness. Push that process too far, or apply it to an image that's already been compressed once, and the shortcuts start to show: blocky squares around sharp edges, colour banding in smooth gradients like skies, and a general softness where fine detail used to be.

That second part matters more than people realise: compression compounds. A JPEG that's been saved, reopened, edited, and saved again has been through the lossy process multiple times, and each pass throws away a little more. A photo that's been screenshotted, re-saved, and re-uploaded a few times across different apps has usually taken several rounds of this before you ever see the final, noticeably softer result.

Downsizing does the rest

Compression isn't the only thing happening. Most platforms also resize your image down to whatever the largest size it'll actually be displayed at, there's no reason to store a 4000px-wide photo if the biggest place it appears on the site is 1200px wide. That's reasonable on its own, but it means any zooming or cropping someone does later works from a smaller source than your original, compounding the softness further.

What actually helps

  • Upload the largest original you have. A platform can only compress down from what you give it; starting from a bigger, sharper source leaves more room before quality loss becomes visible.
  • Avoid re-saving a photo repeatedly. Each save-and-reopen cycle in a lossy format compounds the loss, even if you didn't change anything meaningful.
  • Use PNG for anything with sharp edges or text, like a screenshot or a graphic, rather than JPEG. PNG's compression doesn't throw away detail the way JPEG's does, which is why screenshots and logos hold up better saved that way.
  • Don't upscale a small image expecting it to look sharper. Stretching a small photo larger doesn't add back detail that was never captured; it just makes the existing softness bigger.

Where this matters most

For a casual photo in a group chat, none of this is worth worrying about. It matters more for things that get reused or scrutinised: a profile picture that gets cropped smaller elsewhere, a product photo a customer might zoom into, a screenshot in documentation someone will actually read closely. In those cases, starting from the largest, least-compressed source you have, and editing it as few times as possible before the final export, is the whole trick.
