How to Make a Discord Avatar That Doesn't Get Cropped Weird

Discord's upload screen shows you a square. Everywhere the avatar actually appears, next to your messages, in the member list, in your profile card, on the status ring, it's a circle. That mismatch is the entire reason so many Discord avatars look fine in the uploader and then arrive with a forehead missing.

Why the square preview lies to you

When you upload a photo, Discord lets you drag and zoom inside a square frame, then it saves that square and clips it to a circle at display time. The corners of your square, the parts you can see fine in the editor, get cut away. If you framed your face right up against the edge of the square, you've put it right where the circle removes the most.

It's the same problem as a Christmas photo cropped for a passport, the aspect ratio of the frame you're given doesn't match the shape your photo will actually take. The fix isn't a Discord setting; it's framing your photo for a circle before you ever get to the uploader.

What actually gets clipped

A circle inscribed inside a square touches the middle of each edge and cuts the four corners hardest. Translate that to a face: ears go first, then the top of the head and the chin, then, if you've zoomed in aggressively, parts of the jaw. Anything you want visible needs to sit inside that inner circle, not just inside the square Discord shows you.

• • The very top of the head goes next if you've centred on the eyes rather than the whole face
• • Logos or text near the edge of a server icon or bot avatar get shaved unevenly since a circle doesn't clip a straight line the way a square does

Framing it right before you upload

Instead of fighting Discord's square-frame editor, crop the image to a circle first and upload the already-circular result. Discord's square uploader will just show your circular image sitting inside a square with transparent corners, and since there's nothing but empty space in those corners, nothing important is at risk of being clipped a second time.

1. Pick a photo where your face fills most of the frame. Discord avatars display small almost everywhere except your own profile pop-up, so fine detail is wasted.
2. Crop it with our Circle Crop tool. Drag to centre your face, leave a little breathing room rather than filling the circle edge to edge, and download the PNG.
3. Upload the circular PNG to Discord as your avatar. What you already see in the circle is what everyone else will see.

Server icons have the same problem, plus one more

Server icons go through the identical square-to-circle treatment, but they usually carry a logo or wordmark instead of a face, and text handles cropping worse than faces do. A logo that runs edge to edge in a square looks broken as soon as the corners disappear. Give any text or logo mark real padding, at least 10-15% of the image width on every side, before you crop it to a circle.

The green online dot eats a corner too

One detail people miss: Discord overlays your status indicator, the little green, yellow, or grey dot, on the bottom-right of your avatar wherever it shows next to a message. If you've got something you care about tucked into that bottom-right corner, plan on it being covered a meaningful chunk of the time. Centre the subject instead of pushing it to a corner and this stops being a problem.
